Building Resilience

Purpose for Building Resilience Exercise

There is an increasing acceptance that building resilience is now an essential competency in both business, personal and team building contexts. Given the pressures, demands, expectations, pace of work and the continuous change that most people experience, many people/teams will find it difficult to maintain an even keel and sustain high levels of energy, confidence, and performance.

This exercise is a useful guide to provide a personal and team wide insight and a guide to where people or teams can best to put energy, be clear about what resources they can use and which alternative approaches they may need to strengthen to resolve issues or move forward positively and drive for common goals and success.

Self-assessment of resilience characteristics

Consider your personal level for each of these essential resilience characteristics. Particularly when you are under pressure and experiencing high levels of change

To What Extent do you?

POTENTIAL OUTCOMES

Questions are likely to raise further areas of development that may fall outside your immediate or critical situation. The teams key role at this point is to focus on what is relevant and at the same time agree what they want to do in working with the additional learning these results may yield.
Many teams do not recognize or acknowledge their resilience gaps. As professionals most of you may think we should be able to do all of these things. You can all really help by asking challenging questions and probing and testing any assumptions – eg ‘That is just something you do.’

We recommend that you work methodically through all of the elements, as experience suggests the biggest gains often come from discussions about points or observations that are not immediately raised.

The scores are less important than the thinking that is generated by completing and analysing what your responses mean for them. As you progress in the development of this team, you will all need to create the time for discussing and identifying the key relevant messages and outcomes from the principles and key outcomes from this initial building resilience exercise as a basis for the establishment of a high-performance team.
